We limit phones because we want students fully present — with God, with each other, and with the people we’re serving. Our phone policy protects focus, unity, and spiritual attentiveness so students can engage deeply rather than observe from behind a screen.
This reflects our standard practice for THRIVE retreats. At the same time, we recognize the trust involved in taking your student on an international trip. We do not want our phone policy to create unnecessary anxiety. Below is our plan for communication throughout the trip.
Phones stay in pockets or bags whenever we meet as a team. Learning to step away from constant connection creates space for deeper community and spiritual growth. It's also good practice for when we are on outreach.
Students may use their phones freely while traveling. Travel days can be long and stressful, and access to music or communication with family can be helpful.
We will collect phones once we are settled in the Dominican Republic on Sunday, March 22.
We have five full days of chapel construction and outreach. Even without service or WiFi, phones consistently divide attention and limit engagement. Collecting phones helps protect the purpose of the trip and the unity of our team.
Please know:
We will send daily updates including photos, highlights, and prayer needs.
You are not cut off from your student.
If your student needs to speak with you at any time, we will facilitate that.
In the event of a serious medical or safety situation, parents will be contacted immediately.
If a student experiences homesickness, our leaders are experienced in caring for them. In our experience, constant phone access often increases homesickness rather than helping it. If a conversation with a parent is needed, we will arrange it!
Phones will be returned on Friday, March 27. Students may use them for beach time, celebration banquet photos, packing, and travel home on Saturday.
